Travel Options

Airports. Istanbul is served by two international airports: Istanbul Atatürk Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side of the city. There are numerous direct flights into Istanbul Atatürk from major hubs in Europe and the United States. There are also a number of flights (of low-cost carriers) into Sabiha Gökçen from a number of major hubs in Europe.

Airport Transfers from IST. To transfer from Istanbul Atatürk Airport to hotels in Sultanahmet or Maçka, a traveler has three options: metro, shuttle, and taxi.
  • Metro: After you pick up your luggage, proceed to the gates and take the escalators down to the ground level. Take the metro from Havalimani to Zeytinburnu station. At Zeytinburnu station, switch to light metro system to take T2 to Sultanahmet.
  • Shuttle: After you pick up your luggage, proceed to the gates and outside. Havas buses park in the second lane outside. Take the bus until the last stop at Taksim from where you can take a taxi to your hotel. The departure times of the shuttle can be found at http://www.havas.net/en/ The cost for the shuttle is 10TL (which is around 7 US$).
  • Taxi: After you pick up your luggage, proceed to outside through the gates. Yellow cabs park in the first lane outside. Make sure that the driver turns on the meter. Tipping of cab drivers in Turkey is not required but certainly appreciated. If you need one, you must request a receipt from the cab driver. The cost to Sultanahmet or Taksim should be around 50-60TL (around 36-40 US$).
